The camera continued to pan and finally the men were nearing each other. McCain actually passed behind Obama and just as he passed his shoulder he patted him on the back.
McCain had stepped a bit further ahead, turning and hesitated watching his wife and Obama approach as Obama turned. McCain's hand was out in an effort to catch a handshake, but he was just too late as Obama reached toward McCain's wife for a greeting.
McCain unfortunately but tellingly gave a shrug as if he believed or was indicating Obama had just snubbed him.
CNN caught the moment in the photo...
Notice Mrs. McCain does not extend her hand for a handshake. Maybe McCain saw that she hadn't. Her arms appeared wrapped behind her back...
