The Political Wire: McCain Alarmed By Reports of Electronic Voting Problems in S.C.
by FOXNews.com
Saturday, January 19, 2008
(2:27 p.m. ET)

John McCain’s campaign is voicing concern about reports that one region in South Carolina is having problems with its electronic voting system.

The location: Horry County, which includes Myrtle Beach.

”We have received reports from Horry County that voters are being turned away from the polls, because electronic voting machines are not working and paper ballots are not available,” the McCain camp said in its statement. “Some voters say they are being instructed to return at a later time. We are disturbed by these reports and hope that this issue is resolved immediately. We encourage any voters who were turned away from the polls to return again to their polling place this afternoon to exercise their constitutional right to vote.”

Gary Balm, a spokesman for the South Carolina Election Commission, said the commission is looking into the problem, but that the law states paper ballots must be available as a backup.

It appears to be a technician error. Technicians apparently did not “clear” the machines, meaning when poll place managers went to start up the machines, some already registered votes on them.

Voting machines down in Myrtle Beach
By Adam | January 19, 2008 - 11:13 am - Posted in Primary Season, Republicans
The Myrtle Beach Sun News is reporting that several voting machines are down in the area:

A computer programming error caused several electronic voting machines to not work when the polls opened at 7 a.m. today for the Republican primary, according to Sandy Martin, Horry County’s Voters Registration and Election director.

“We’re working on getting it all worked out,” Martin said at 9:15 a.m. “Most of them are up and running now. There are a few scattered precincts we haven’t got to yet.”

Martin said voters used paper ballots to cast their votes in places at precincts where electronic machines malfunctioned.”

But by 10 a.m., several people have called The Sun News to say that several precincts were out of paper ballots or running out of them.

McCain’s SC campaign manager Buzz Jacobs has just issued the following statement:

“We have received reports from Horry County that voters are being turned away from the polls, because electronic voting machines are not working and paper ballots are not available. Some voters say they are being instructed to return at a later time. We are disturbed by these reports and hope that this issue is resolved immediately. We encourage any voters who were turned away from the polls to return again to their polling place this afternoon to exercise their constitutional right to vote.”
