Tuesday was a shopping day of sorts for officials from Northampton and two other northeast Pennsylvania counties looking to replace their former electronic voting machines in time for the April 22 primary.
Next, it's crunch the numbers, digest the information, and make a choice.
''Now it's decision time,'' said Northampton County Executive John Stoffa as a day of product demonstrations ended around mid-afternoon on the third floor of the county courthouse in Easton.
Northampton County officials, along with officials from Lackawanna and Wayne counties, looked at voting systems from all five vendors certified in the state. One company, Hart InterCivic, offered two certified models.
The counties, left in a bind with the decertification of their machines from Texas-based Advanced Voting Solutions, are in the hunt for a new system that will meet federal and state standards.
Each vendor made a presentation during a closed-door morning session with officials from the three counties. In the afternoon, demonstrations were given in an open session geared toward the Northampton County Election Commission and the public.
In Northampton's case, officials in the morning session rated the various aspects of the various voting systems. They will compile those evaluations and come up with a recommendation for the commission, which will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday. A commission recommendation will go to County Council on Thursday night.
The three counties on Tuesday saw two full-face electronic machines that show the entire ballot at once and most closely mimic the former mechanical lever machines.
In addition, other electronic machines were displayed, as was a digital optical scanner that read paper ballots. Vendors involved were Hart InterCivic, Premier Election Systems (formerly Diebold Election Systems), Sequoia Voting Systems, Election Systems & Software Inc., and Electec Inc. (machines from Danaher Controls).
Joe Long, chairman of the Northampton County Democratic Committee, and Bob Kilbanks, who heads the county Republican Committee, both said they favored a full-face version...

Electec Inc., which is used in six Pennsylvania counties including Philadelphia, presented a large touchpad voting machine. A large paper ballot sits on top of a touch-sensitive grid and when a person touches a candidate's name, a light comes on.

Only Sequoia Voting System and Electec Inc. offer the option of full-screen voting machines, Conklin said. The other three companies have smaller touch screens similar to the old Advanced Voting Solutions machines.
With the AVS machines, voters used multiple screens in order to see the entire ballot. With full screen machines, the entire ballot is displayed on a large screen and is hidden with a privacy screen or curtain.
