Note the challenged ballots there is no accounting whether these ballots were from absentees - most are simply over-marked. Had the absentees believed the ballot they submitted would not be counted because of the in most cases silly overmarkes, those voters should have appeared at the polling place on election day. The faulty paper ballot would have been voided, and voters could have had access to the optical scanner to warn of such overvotes.

People who vote absentee should be especially careful, although simple mistakes like checking inside the oval rather than filling in the oval likely would be counted by the machine. One that is overmarked with the check stretching up into the above candidate's area should be disqualified.

Voters have responsibility to read directions.
