What has precipitated this revisit of the Path to 9/11 is likely Sandy Berger... John Gibson mentioned the upcoming Hannity programming this evening, and queried Lanny Davis on the scenes which were deleted after complaints were made at the time.

“The Path to 9/11” is no suspense story.

Before the opening credits roll, we know how it will end.

We can only watch with a growing, appalling sense of dread. We know how this chain of events is going to turn out. We know that no matter how many right decisions are made, the wrong ones will win out, and the nation will lose.

So we are spectators at a tragedy we've seen before, looking on helplessly as the disaster inexorably unfolds...

... Shot in the grainy, jumpy style of a fly-on-the-wall documentary, “The Path to 9/11” runs for six hours, and will air without commercials.

It has come under attack, however, from former members of the Clinton administration who have challenged its accuracy. Former antiterrorism chief Richard Clarke told The New York Times that a scene where CIA agents are stopped by Washington officials from grabbing Osama bin Laden is “utterly invented.” 9/11 Commission member Richard Ben-Veniste told the Times that while former President Bill Clinton is depicted as stopping a CIA attempt to kill bin Laden, he in fact did give the go-ahead.

“The content of this drama is factually and incontrovertibly inaccurate, and ABC has a duty to fully correct all errors or pull the drama entirely,” Clinton Foundation head Bruce Lindsey and Clinton adviser Douglas Band wrote in a letter to the network.

ABC has responded with a statement that no one has seen the final copy. The network said the miniseries is “a dramatization, not a documentary, drawn from a variety of sources.” Marc Platt, the film's executive producer, said the film “portrayed the essence of the truth of these events.”

The narrative is based on “The 9/11 Commission Report,” published by the bipartisan committee appointed to find answers to some hard questions. "The Path to 9/11," a six-hour miniseries scheduled to air September 10 and 11 on ABC, has certain former members of the Clinton administration in a panic.


The docudrama is thoroughly sourced and exposes information that former members of the Clinton administration had previously tried to suppress: that there was a failure on the part of the administration to respond to terrorism, inaction that ended up being partly to blame for the tragic events that took place on 9/11.


"Path" is based on the 9/11 Commission Final Report and the 2003 book "The Cell: Inside the 9/11 Plot, and Why the FBI and CIA Failed to Stop It." New Jersey Governor and Commission Co-chairman Thomas H. Kean served as a consultant for the miniseries.

Alarming 9/11 claim is baseless, panel says

WASHINGTON -- Rejecting one of the most disturbing claims about the Sept. 11 terrorist strikes, the Senate Intelligence Committee has concluded as untrue a congressman's contention that a team of military analysts identified Mohamed Atta or other hijackers before the attacks, according to a summary of the panel's investigation obtained by The Times.

The findings repudiate assertions by Rep. Curt Weldon (R-Pa.) and a few military officers that U.S. national security officials ignored startling intelligence in early 2001 that might have helped to prevent the attacks.

In particular, Weldon and other officials have repeatedly claimed that the team of military analysts, known as Able Danger, produced a chart that included a picture of Atta and identified him as being tied to an Al Qaeda cell in Brooklyn, N.Y. Weldon has also said that the chart was shared with White House officials, including Stephen J. Hadley, then deputy national security advisor.

But after a 16-month investigation, the Intelligence Committee has concluded that those assertions are unfounded.

"Able Danger did not identify Mohammed Atta or any other 9/11 hijacker at any time prior to Sept. 11, 2001," the committee determined, according to an eight-page letter sent last week to panel members by the top Republican and Democrat on the committee...

...The recently completed probe also dismissed other assertions that have fueled conspiracy theories surrounding the Sept. 11 attacks.

The panel said it found "no evidence" to support claims by military officers connected to Able Danger that Defense Department lawyers prevented the team's analysts from sharing their findings with counterterrorism officials at the FBI before the attacks.

Nor was the alleged chart or any information developed by Able Danger improperly destroyed at the direction of Pentagon lawyers, a charge that has stoked claims of a cover-up...

This link chart was created by Jacob L. Boesen, an analyst contracted by DIAC: The Defense Intelligence Analysis Center. Using Analyst's Notebook, the same high-end program used to design a number of the Able Danger link charts, Boesen created the chart on August 10th, 1999. It shows a direct link between al Qaeda and the New York cell of blind Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman and Ramzi Yousef, the mastermind of the original WTC bombing and the 9/11 plots.


The chart, produced just over a year after the bin Laden financed African Embassy bombings on August 7th, 1998, is in direct contradiction to the findings of the 9/11 Commission -- per Senior Counsel Dietrich Dieter Snell -- that the original WTC bombing cell was comprised of a loosely organized group of Sunni Islamists and that Ramzi Yousef played no role in the conception of the 9/11 plots even though his uncle Khalid Shaikh Mohammed (KSM) was identified by the FBI in 2002 as the "mastermind."

Protecting Clinton's legacy

Part 1 of this exploration led from the first World Trade Center bombing in February 1993 to the destruction of TWA Flight 800 on July 17, 1996. The culprits behind both, perhaps indirectly in the TWA Flight 800 case, were likely an elite crew of Baluchi terrorists – WTC I mastermind Ramzi Yousef and 9-11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammad (KSM) being most notable – that sold its services to both al-Qaida and Iraq...

...At the 9-11 commission hearing in spring 2004, the first question asked of National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice was whether anyone had briefed her before 9-11 in regard to terrorists "using planes as bombs." She said no. In his least objective thrust, Lance chides Rice repeatedly for this and implies that she is lying.

Lance makes no mention of what Clarke had told the same commission before Rice testified. Under questioning, Clarke admitted that the "knowledge about al-Qaida having thought of using aircraft as weapons" was relatively old – "5 years, 6 years old." He asks that intelligence analysts "be forgiven for not thinking about it given the fact that they hadn't seen a lot in the five or six years intervening about it."

There are only two reasons why Clarke might not have shared any of this information with the incoming administration. One was incompetence. The other was to remove TWA Flight 800, which exploded five years before 9-11, from the conversation. The evidence points strongly to the latter.

Clarke had help keeping this all under wraps. Former Deputy Attorney General Jamie Gorelick, who suppressed the TWA 800 investigation, was likely placed on the 9-11 commission for no other reason. She had been in a position to kill the OKC investigation as well

The Path from WTC I to WTC II

TWA Flight 800 is the Rosetta Stone of 9-11. If we can accurately decipher the destruction of that plane July 17, 1996, we will be able to interpret the larger events of Sept. 11.
I appreciate the patience of those who have followed this effort, which is essentially a work in progress. Since we have begun this journey on the pages of WorldNetDaily, I have heard from hundreds, if not thousands, of aviation professionals, eyewitnesses and family members, many of whom have contributed to our collective understanding. Needless to say, this journey could not have begun without the work of James Sanders, my co-author on "First Strike."

Since the 10th anniversary of TWA Flight 800's demise July 17, 2006, I have received more useful intelligence than I had in the five years prior. The most recent contributions include Peter Lance's bold new book, "Triple Cross," reviewed on these pages last week, terrorist expert Laurie Mylroie's continuing research, and an extraordinary technical review of the crash data, simply titled "Review of Government Evidence from the Crash of TWA FLIGHT 800." I will refer to this document as the "Review." I and a few others received it from an author or authors still unknown, but who is/are following this series in WND...

What follows is an outline of the path from WTC I to WTC II according to best available evidence. If this outline seems more coherent than those you have seen elsewhere, there are two reasons why. One is that almost no one in the mainstream media will utter the words "TWA Flight 800." This includes several prominent terrorist experts, who deeply distrust the government's mechanical explanation for the plane's demise but who are understandably reluctant to go public. Kudos to "Triple Cross" author Peter Lance for breaking this taboo. He risks his career in so doing.

The second reason is even more problematic than the first. In their relentless effort to discredit President Bush, the mainstream media refuse to acknowledge the possibility of an Iraq connection to either the first WTC bombing or 9-11, let alone to TWA Flight 800. Indispensable to understanding the Iraq-al-Qaida connection is the work of Weekly Standard reporter Stephen Hayes.

Pundits talk endlessly about connecting the proverbial dots, but if they leave two critical dots off the table, connections become mere concoctions. What follows are some verifiable dots, logically connected...

Lance argues that Yousef and his "uncle" Khalid Sheikh Mohammad (KSM) originated the 9-11 plot and had drafted plans as early as 1994. He ties the Baluchis into al-Qaida.

Laurie Mylroie makes a much stronger argument that the loose living, religiously indifferent Baluchis – Murad, Yousef, KSM and their various "cousins" – were an elite, Iraqi-trained crew of terrorists who put their services on the world market once the Iraq-Iran war came to an end. Mylroie does not believe that they hooked up with bin Laden until 1996 when the still obscure Saudi moved to Afghanistan.

Many serious people – including Lance and anti-terror czar Richard Clarke – think it possible that the Baluchis taught Terry Nichols how to build a truck bomb during one of his many visits to the Philippines. The Clinton administration found it much more politically useful to drop the swarthy "John Doe No. 2" from the investigation and restrict the OKC bomb plot to the blond and crew-cut...

'Triple Cross' blows TWA 800 wide open

Of all the mainstream reporters writing today on the terror front, none has the cojones of five-time Emmy Award winner Peter Lance, author of the new book, "Triple Cross: How bin Laden's Master Spy Penetrated the CIA, the Green Berets, and the FBI – and Why Patrick Fitzgerald Failed to Stop Him."

Lance sets out his thesis in the subtitle of this sprawling, daring epic, but as Lance knows, the most explosive part of his book deals not with Ali Mohamed, the master spy in question, but with the fate of TWA Flight 800. This is the Boeing 747 that blew up mysteriously off the coast of Long Island on July 17, 1996.

"Triple Cross" is sufficiently important that I will take at least two columns to explicate it, the second and perhaps third on Lance's larger thesis, the first on his inquiry into the fate of TWA Flight 800. In the way of full disclosure, Lance and I have over the last year or two shared information on a few of the key elements within the book.

1) originated, controlled and managed by the NTSB (a small independent agency largely comprised of mild-mannered engineers.)

2)A wide variety of current and former NTSB employees have had the lives of themselves and their families threatened in order to keep them quiet, and this has been maintained over two presidencies.

Not that I am defending Cashill, but I didn't read his article as abandoning his own missile theory and adopting Peter Lance's theory so much as just reporting on the new theory. For instance:


...I have some real points of disagreement with Lance's arguments. Although Lance pushes the mainstream media to their limits, he has largely stayed within their pale. This I understand, especially on the subject of TWA Flight 800. To mention the word "missile" in that context is to risk losing a TV presence.
I think, generally, conspiracies are nearly impossible to maintain on a large-scale for any length of time. People just cannot keep their mouths shut.

But I do think there could have been a Middle Eastern connection to Oklahoma City, and I wouldn't rule out bureaucrats "overlooking" evidence on TWA 800 in order to cover their asses.

That being said, I have yet to actually be convinced that either of these two theories are anything more than interesting conjecture.
