Democrat Rep. Rush Holt Fears those military ballots submitted by fax/email

Oh just come on now, Rep. Holt, the overseas military absentee ballot system is secure because every absentee ballot submission has a "voter verified paper ballot!"

(Plus Democrats are OK with it for Democratic Presidential Primaries...)

Electronic transmission
After faxing or emailing any election material always mail the original to the appropriate state or local election official in your state or territory. Generally, all election-related materials may be mailed postage-paid in the U.S. mails, including APO/FPO facilities and all U.S. Embassies and Consulates. You must pay postage if the materials are mailed from a non-U.S. postal facility.

If emailing, it is recommended that the citizen email the local election official directly. If unable to access the local election official's email address, include this transmittal sheet in the attachment along with the voting materials and email to ets@fvap.ncr.gov.

It couldn't be any simpler than that. ONE SERVICE MAN OR SERVICE WOMAN AND ONE VOTE! As Imus told Senator John F. Kerry. JUST STOP. STOP IT....

Holt's attempt to call into question the process for absentee military voting at this time, a mere few days out from the election is nothing short of preposterous.

This is the same Representative who proposed legistlation for what - a voter verified paper audit trail - for the direct electronic recording voting systems.

The voter verified paper audit trail is exactly what the overseas absentee ballot system employs.

REALLY - REP. HOLT - ENOUGH BS.

Fox 'n Friends picked up the story...

Steve Doocey:... There's a New Jersey Representative questioning the military absentee vote... Rep. Rush Holt is saying look there might be id theft, security problems... and he's calling into question whether the military ballots are safe... according to the Pentagon, the process is secure, not to worry...

E.D. Hill interviews pair of commentators on the issue of military ballots, security, identity theft...

We'll be tracking whether MSNBC, CNN, CNN transcripts, Chris Matthews of HARDBALL, Lou Dobbs Tonight cover this big story.

Military Ballots May Pose Privacy Risks
Defense Tech | Noah Shachtman | November 02, 2006
American troops could be putting their most personal information at
risk -- just by voting in next week's elections.

Members of the armed forces, stationed overseas, can cast their vote
with a Federal Write In Absentee Ballot, or FWAB, if they can't get one
from their local election boards. But that federal ballot, "Standard
Form 186 (Oct 95)" comes with a major privacy risk, at least in some
editions. The ballot has to be mailed in a special return envelope, in
order to be properly processed. On military bases in the Pacific,
Special Form 186 requires a service member to include his address,
social security number, date of birth, and signature on the outside of
that envelope.

In other words, everything needed to steal a soldier or sailor's
identity is on public display, for anyone to see.

"You'd think the people running this program would've noticed. It's a
joke they didn't, and it's obvious no one was paying attention," a Navy
aviation electrician, attached to the 7th Fleet, tells Defense Tech.

Online editions of the FWAB seem to be more security-conscious, warning
servicemembers "NOT [to] WRITE ANY PERSONAL IDENTIFYING INFORMATION ON
THE ENVELOPE" -- an envelope that's largely blank.

But the paper ballots aren't the only source of privacy concerns in the
military voting system. An e-mail balloting program has been called
into question, for using unencrypted data. "E-mail traffic can flow
through equipment owned and operated by various governments, companies
and individuals in many countries," the Washington Post quotes an
August report prepared for the Pentagon as saying. "It is easily
monitored, blocked and subject to tampering."

But even easier to monitor is a paper ballot, with personal data
scrawled right on the outside of the enevelope. Which is why the Navy
aviation electrician refused to use the form...

Technology will assure that military absentee ballots get counted -- What about the rest of us?
By Paul McNamara on Thu, 09/21/2006 - 9:53am
The Department of Defense and an e-mail encryption company called PostX are about to announce that PostX has been chosen to fix what has long been a thorny problem for the military: ensuring that absentee ballots of soldiers serving overseas get collected and counted.

AP Nov 2, 5:51 PM EST

E-Mail Ballots for Military Questioned WASHINGTON (AP) -- A New Jersey congressman raised questions Thursday about a new military voting program that lets service members request and submit their ballots by fax or e-mail.

The Defense Department, however, said the program is as secure as possible, and any risks are detailed for the military members when they access the e-mail system.

In a letter to Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, Democratic Rep. Rush Holt said the electronic registration and voting service is well-intentioned, but could expose troops to identity theft, or allow hackers or others to tamper with the ballots when they are in transit.

"After the Defense Department was stopped from implementing a program like this two years ago because it was full of security holes, I'm angry and astonished that they're doing it again without review, scrutiny, and oversight," said Holt.

He said that while U.S. military personnel should participate in the political process, "no one is served by introducing possibilities for error, insecurity, and fraud."

Pentagon spokeswoman Cynthia Smith said the Defense Department has set up a secure absentee voter program that will allow military members to request and receive absentee ballots. The new program, she said, lets people vote without relying on the regular mail system.

As part of the program, many states allow military members deployed overseas to return their completed ballot via fax or the Internet. Those ballots, Smith said, will not pass through the hands of any government officials until they are received by a local election authority.

"The e-mail-to-fax operation does have risks, but we have taken every precaution to limit those risks," said Smith. She said U.S. service members have been told of the potential privacy concerns with the system, so they can make an informed choice about whether to use the program.

Pentagon launches Internet voting effort for overseas Americans
Civilians as well as military to be eligible

By Alan Boyle
MSNBC
June 3, 2003 - Thousands of overseas Americans are expected to be able to cast ballots from their home computers in the 2004 elections, the Pentagon said Monday. Military personnel and civilians alike will be eligible to take part in the federal government’s most ambitious experiment yet in Internet-based voting.

The project — known as the Secure Electronic Registration and Voting Experiment, or SERVE — builds on a smaller-scale effort in the 2000 elections. This time around, the system will incorporate digital certificates as an added security measure...

Democrats Send Mixed Signals
in Voting Technology Debate
by Lynn Landes
www.dissidentvoice.org
January 13, 2004

There's something strange going on in the Democratic Party. While George Bush's buddies dominate the vote counting business with no apologies to anyone about this rather incredible conflict-of-interest, Democrats are sending mixed signals on this continuing train wreck for democracy.

Let's start with billionaire George Soros, the Democrats anointed billionaire savior. They should get to know him better. According to voting rights activists, Soros is a proponent of Internet voting, the most insecure voting technology on face of the planet. He's also a disciple for Direct Democracy (i.e., the initiative process). Think about that. For anyone who wants to control a government, the combination of the Internet voting and Direct Democracy is a fascist's dream-team. Through control of vote-counting technology, not only could "someone" pick our legislators, they could also pass their own legislation. They could be a true Wizard of Oz...

Howard Dean says on his website, "I support pending legislation to require that all voting machines produce an actual paper record that voters can view to check the accuracy of their votes, and allow election officials to verify votes in the event of irregularities."

However, the Associated Press reported on Oct. 02, 2003, "Eight of the presidential candidates have written national Democratic officials to support a challenge of Michigan Democrats' plan to allow Internet voting in its caucuses Feb. 7. Only Howard Dean, former Vermont governor, and Wesley Clark, the retired general who just joined the race, did not sign on to back the protest."

One day later, on Oct 3, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) voted to endorse the policy of requiring paper ballots for touchscreen voting machines by the 2004 election. So far so good. This action was in line with Congressman Rush Holt's (D-NJ) legislation to require touchscreen voting machines to produce paper ballots for audit purposes and recounts (HR 2239). Presidential candidate Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) is one of 96 co-sponsors. And despite the fact that the legislation does not call for a full hand count of the ballots, which many activists feel is essential to establish real security, most agree that it's a step in the right direction. Of course there are others, this writer included, who believe that all the machines should be junked.

But on Nov 22, hardly a month later, the DNC took it all back. They voted to approve the use of Internet voting for the Michigan Democratic Primary. What's up with that? Aren't they connecting the dots? No paper ballot - no security - no recount. But, there's also something sinister in the air.

When this reporter called the Michigan Democratic Party to find out which company got the contract for the Internet vote, I was told that the company did not want its name released at that time. I then called the DNC who had to approve the deal and who also agreed to keep the company's name a secret. They finally relented under the merciless scorn this writer heaped on their spokesperson.

So, Election Services Corporation (ESC) is the Internet voting company and Democratic bad boy Tony Coelho is on their board. This is a little unusual in a business dominated by the Republican and foreign corporations. Tony "was a six-term congressman and House majority whip, who resigned from Congress after reports surfaced that he had accepted a sweetheart loan from a troubled S&L operator. The loan helped Coelho buy a $100,000 junk bond, but he never reported it on his government disclosure form. The Justice Department decided not to bring charges against him," according to Slate.msn.com. He was also investigated by the State Department when he was Al Gore's campaign manager for the 2000 presidential election. The investigation was reportedly related to his work as the commissioner general of the United States Pavilion at the 1998 World Expo. As a result, Tony resigned as Gore's campaign manager.

More mixed signals keep coming from the Dems...

Web inventor fears for the future
By Pallab Ghosh
Science correspondent, BBC News

The British developer of the world wide web says he is worried about the way it could be used to spread misinformation and "undemocratic forces".

The web has transformed the way many people work, play and do business.

But Sir Tim Berners-Lee told BBC News he feared that, if the way the internet is used is left to develop unchecked, "bad things" could happen.

He wants to set up a web science research project to study the social implications of the web's development.

Web inventor warns of 'dark' net
By Jonathan Fildes
BBC News science and technology reporter in Edinburgh

The web should remain neutral and resist attempts to fragment it into different services, web inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee has said.

Recent attempts in the US to try to charge for different levels of online access web were not "part of the internet model," he said in Edinburgh.

He warned that if the US decided to go ahead with a two-tier internet, the network would enter "a dark period".

Sir Tim was speaking at the start of a conference on the future of the web.

"What's very important from my point of view is that there is one web," he said.

"Anyone that tries to chop it into two will find that their piece looks very boring."

An equal net

The British scientist developed the web in 1989 as an academic tool to allow scientists to share data. Since then it has exploded into every area of life...

Diebold On Q; Sequoia yellow button

Here Ae Go Again: 'Just Push the Yellow Button and Vote as Many Times as You Want' on Sequoia Touch-Screen Voting Machines! (14 comments )
New Vulnerability Discovered on Systems Made by One of Country's Largest Voting Machine Companies Will Affect Elections in Dozens of States!

California's Secretary of State Bruce McPherson Denies Knowledge of Vulnerability Well After His Office Had Been Notified...

"Just push the yellow button and you can vote as many times as you want," Tom Courbat, an Election Integrity advocate from Riverside County, California informed The BRAD BLOG tonight. Not that we're in any mood to report more such stories, but this seems to be a big one. A very big one.

It seems there's a little yellow button on the back every touch-screen computer made by Sequoia Voting Systems, that allows any voter, or poll worker, or precinct inspector to set the system into "Manual Mode" allowing them to cast as many votes as they want.

Concerns about the flaw were first reported some thirty days ago to California Secretary of State Bruce McPherson's office by Ron Watt, a Tehama County, CA precinct inspector who has been a poll worker in the county for the last fifteen years. And yet, as recently as a radio interview last Tuesday, McPherson -- who has been crowing about having the country's most stringent security process for voting systems -- denied he was aware of any security issues with Sequoia systems.

"They didn't care about it," Watt told us tonight about his "late September or early October" discussion with McPherson's voting systems chief Bruce McDannold. "He said he didn't think it was an important issue. He said I don't believe this is really a vulnerability."

Watt and Courbat disagreed and placed another phone call to the SoS' office on Friday after Watt received a copy of Sequoia's "Poll Workers Guide, Booklet #5: Troubleshooting" via a public records request in Tehama. On pages 19 through 22 of the booklet -- which is marked as "Confidential and Proprietary" -- he confirmed the simple manual override to the system. He'd learned about it years earlier and the new manuals confirmed that button was still in place. Even in the latest models of the Sequoia Edge voting systems (both models 1 and 2).

The complete sequence to override the system and enter manual voting mode, along with the Sequoia booklet received via Watt's public records request is now posted here at BlackBoxVoting.org.

Watt had been taught to be a poll worker trainer by De La Rue, the former parent company of Sequoia, years ago when the systems were first brought into the county. The two men placed a conference call with McDannold last Friday after receiving the booklet. McDannold again reportedly downplayed the concerns, but said "he'd look into it," according to Courbat...

...Thanks to the dilligence of Watt and Courbat, it is now confirmed that all such systems are completely vulnerable to virtually anybody who wishes to cast as many votes as they please.

"I can do it in 18 seconds," says Watt. "I can train you to do it in 3 minutes. Just push the yellow button, wait 3 seconds and it chimes. Push the yellow button again, wait 3 seconds and it chimes again. Then it's all on the screen prompts. You're asked 'Do you want to enter manual mode?' and you push 'Yes'...And then you're on your way."

"You can then vote as many times as you want. You won't ever have to stop until someone physically restrains you from voting," he explained.

"But wouldn't someone hear the chime?" we asked...

"No, it's barely audible. Quieter than the beep on your computer when it boots up. The systems are usually kept up against the wall to be near a power outlet and away from the poll workers for privacy. Plus, if you really wanted to pull it off, just come in with a friend and have them talk to the poll workers to distract them. Nobody would ever know."

McDannold's message left on Courbat's cell phone Monday confirming the issue. "Sequoia was actually in here this morning giving us a demonstration of the feature and how it works and how you would set it up and put it into that mode," said McDannold.

He claimed that the SoS office had then contacted all California counties using the Sequoia Edge and said "they are all doing poll worker training" and "putting signs up to warn people about the severe penalties for tampering with voting equipment uh which is would fall under---- most of them are putting signs actually on the machines."

"They are also being very conscious of the placement of the equipment so that they can observe, actually many of them are - have already planned to assign staff members to do nothing but just watch the machines for that purpose to make sure ah nobody is reaching around or doing anything," McDannold explained on the recorded message...

Story featured on Lou Dobbs Tonight

DOBBS: Election workers are scrambling all over the country trying to deal with an avalanche of last-minute problems with e-voting machines. With this information just pouring in, it's difficult to understand how the electorate can feel any sense of confidence in our upcoming election.

Kitty Pilgrim reports.

KITTY PILGRIM, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): You really can't miss it, the yellow button at the back of the Sequoia voting machine. Tens of thousand of machines used in 16 state and Washington, D.C. That button puts the machine in manual mode so anyone can vote and repeatedly cast as many votes as they want.

Activists say it's a major problem.

TOM COURBAT, SAVE R VOTE: I worry about the poll captains having access. They're temporary workers. In many cases there aren't background checks done on them. And it's easy for them to go back there, make those changes, and vote repeatedly and not be noticed.

PILGRIM: Sequoia says this button is a standard and deliberate feature. The California Secretary of State's Office says they have security guidelines to alert poll workers to keep a close watch on the button and any tampering. All across the country, activists have called attention to vulnerabilities on all kinds of electronic voting machines, but few of those vulnerabilities have been fixed.

LOWELL FINLEY, VOTER ACTION: We're at the 11th hour and it's too late to do anything to stop the use of these e-voting machines, but it's not too late for voters to do something about it, and we're here to train volunteers so that they can get out there and observe the process and document, shine a light, on the problem that e-voting is causing in this country.

PILGRIM: All sorts of electronic glitches are showing up, screens display the wrong candidate when a button is pushed. Today in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, large print options didn't work properly, cutting off candidate names and election officials struggled with other electronic snafus.

MICHAEL VU, CUYAHOGA CO. ELECTION OFFICIAL: We just got notice from the Secretary of State's Office today that some voting units will not be reflective of Daylight Savings Time. PILGRIM: Potentially causing the machines to close down early. Technicians from the voting companies are working to sort out the last-minute problems.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

PILGRIM: Today, activists pointed out that Sequoia will again have Venezuelan nationalists as support workers on the electronic machines. That's in Cook County, Illinois. Now, the workers are project managers from Smartmatic, the Venezuelan company that bought Sequoia.

Election officials say they have no way of knowing how many Venezuelans will be there but they've seen some around. Sequoia today said eight to 10 Venezuelan nationals will help with the voting machines during the elections -- Lou.

DOBBS: Hugo Chavez is sending observers and monitors for our election, I take it?

PILGRIM: I -- you know, Venezuelan nationals taking a look at our machines.

DOBBS: Well, that's wonderful. I mean, there are times I keep expecting the country to just sort of go into a group scream over these e-voting machines because it does not make any sense that we could be in this kind of vulnerable, absurd position this close ...

PILGRIM: Activists are in a group scream, and I think it's important that everyone document anything that goes wrong so that it can be known.

DOBBS: Is there a sense among those activists, in particular, we're going to have enough people monitoring these elections to be aware in time that something has happened?

PILGRIM: They are trying to set up hotlines and volunteer organizations.

DOBBS: All right, thank you very much. We'll continue here in just one moment. Stay with us.

November Democrat Wins Evidence of Conspiracy

Don't be so sure that victories by Democrats in the national Congressional elections will mean that the direct recording electronic voting machines (whose security and reliability have been questioned) accurately recorded and counted electronic (paperless) ballots.

If we can be made to believe a solely Republican conspiracy to hack electronic voting machines nationwide produced mostly Republican wins in 2004, including the presidency of the United States, we can believe a twist on the conspiracy to fraud any one of our American elections.

That twist would in 2006 yield just enough Democrat wins in November 2006 to satisfy Democrats hungry for a takeover of Congress. Such a win would maintain the ordered chaos rampant in American politics since long before year 2000 presidential election.

Democrats will win big, but not the entire House of Representatives, and not the Senate.

Close, close, close, close... (See Hardball Nov. 2: “Hardball” host Chris Matthews asks Charlie Cook, Stu Rothenberg, Howard Fineman and Larry Sabato about their predictions for the midterm elections)

Who's to say the polling as well isn't a conspiracy to get the nation focused on the the possibility of a big takeover, too close to call, for months, weeks, days, then whammo, not a big enough win, maybe just two seats shy of a Democrat majority in the House of Representatives.

Who would do such a thing? Who has the power to control electronic paperless voting machines, media, mainstream newspapers, polling firms?

Democrats use computer hysteria to get out the vote.

Tuesday, July 27, 2004 12:01 a.m. EDT

BOSTON--You don't have to go far here to find a Democrat who says the 2000 election was stolen. John Kerry is one of them. He claims a million African-Americans nationwide had their votes stolen and he won't let it happen again.

On Sunday, he followed that up by saying that his legal SWAT team is looking at "each and every district" with possible voting problems: "We may or may not be bringing challenges publicly in the course of the next few weeks," he said in Ohio. He mentioned that in Florida some voters are being removed from the rolls if they didn't respond to a letter from election officials. Since many states routinely send such mailings to those who haven't voted in years, we are in for an avalanche of litigation if that's the level of scrutiny Mr. Kerry is applying. He might even have to ask former trial lawyer John Edwards to lend a hand.

Many delegates here buy into a more bizarre conspiracy theory: that unscrupulous "Manchurian Programmers" could manipulate the new electronic voting machines that 35 million Americans will use in November. They note that Walden O'Dell, the CEO of Diebold Election Systems, sent a personal fund-raising letter last year to Republicans stating his goal was "helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes to the president." This month, Moveon.org held rallies in 19 states to demand that new electronic machines print paper receipts to ensure an accurate count, something only Nevada will be able to implement by November. Democratic State Rep. Chris Smith of Florida says he is using concerns that votes will be lost or manipulated as a get-out-the-vote tool for John Kerry: "I tell them to bring an extra person to the polls."

It's true some states have moved too quickly using new federal money to buy Direct Recording Electronic voting machines (DREs), which work like an ATM. Several states have reported software failures, and California officials have accused Diebold of using uncertified software and misleading them. But exaggerating the problems with DREs will only fuel a litigation mindset that could make Florida 2000 look like a moot court.

Democrats lead in US election-Reuters poll By John Whitesides, Political Correspondent

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Voters strongly favor Democratic candidates over Republicans in the Nov. 7 congressional election and harbor growing doubts about the Iraq war and the country's future, according to a Reuters/Zogby poll released Thursday.

Two weeks before voters decide which party controls the U.S. Congress, Republicans trail Democrats among independents and are still struggling to shore up their base conservative supporters, the poll found.

Democrats have an 11-point edge, 44 percent to 33 percent, when voters are asked which party's candidate they will support, up slightly from a 9-point lead in the last Reuters/Zogby poll a month ago.

The increase is within the poll's margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Independents favor Democrats by 12 points, and just 56 percent of self-identified conservatives and 68 percent of Republicans say they will vote for the Republican candidate. About 81 percent of Democrats plan to support the Democratic candidate, the poll found.

US House control in Democrats' reach -Reuters poll
7:02 ET, Wed 4 Oct 2006
By John Whitesides, Political Correspondent

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats lead in races for 11 of 15 crucial Republican-held U.S. House seats a month before Nov. 7 elections, putting them within reach of seizing control of the chamber, according to Reuters/Zogby polls released Wednesday.

Republican incumbents are at particularly high risk, the polls found, with seven of nine trailing their Democratic challengers in the high-stakes battle for control of the U.S. Congress.

Democrats must pick up 15 seats to reclaim control of the House, and the polls found Republicans were also behind in four of six open seat races in districts they won in 2004.

Voters Shift Toward House Democrats

By Jill Lawrence, USA TODAY 10/10/2006

WASHINGTON — A Capitol Hill sex scandal has reinforced public doubts about Republican leadership and pushed Democrats to a huge lead in the race for control of Congress four weeks before Election Day, the latest USA TODAY/Gallup Poll shows.
Democrats had a 23-point lead over Republicans in every group of people questioned — likely voters, registered voters and adults — on which party's House candidate would get their vote. That's double the lead Republicans had a month before they seized control of Congress in 1994 and the Democrats' largest advantage among registered voters since 1978.

Nearly three in 10 registered voters said their representative doesn't deserve re-election — the highest level since 1994. President Bush's approval rating was 37% in the new poll, down from 44% in a Sept. 15-17 poll. And for the first time since the question was asked in 2002, Democrats did better than Republicans on who would best handle terrorism, 46%-41%.

"It's hard to see how the climate is going to shift dramatically between now and Election Day," said John Pitney, a former GOP aide on Capitol Hill who now teaches at Claremont-McKenna College in California. He said Iraq remains the biggest problem for Republicans: "People just don't like inconclusive wars."

The plummeting GOP ratings in the poll of 1,007 adults, taken Friday through Sunday, come amid a series of events that have given Democrats ammunition to argue that the country needs a new direction.

Conspiracy Theories Abound After Election
Thursday, November 18, 2004

By Liza Porteus

NEW YORK — John Kerry (search) may have decided against contesting the vote count that gave President Bush (search) a second term, but that hasn't stopped some observers from charging that the American voting system is seriously flawed.

In what some have dubbed "Votergate 2004 (search)," reports are floating around that optical-scan voting machines in Florida were hacked while others counted backward; in Ohio, more ballots were cast than voters were registered and some people were denied ballots. And behind it all, according to some theorists, was an effort to undermine Kerry's presidential bid.

A flurry of rumors bandied about by Web bloggers and others have created a conspiracy-theory atmosphere that many say is creating a whole lot of something out of nothing.

"There are lots of problems out there that really need to be addressed in the wake of the 2004 election," said Jim Adler, president of e-voting company VoteHere, which specialized in election audit technology. "I'm concerned that these conspiracy theories are diverting focus from real problems to the imaginary problems."

BREAKING NEWS: Senate Ethics Director Resigns; Senator Hagel Admits Owning Voting Machine Company By Bev Harris

U.S. CHUCK HAGEL NOW ADMITS OWNERSHIP IN VOTING MACHINE COMPANY SENATE ETHICS COMMITTEE DIRECTOR RESIGNS

“Hagel’s ethics filings pose disclosure issue” -- “The Hill” 1/29/2003

On October, 10, 2002 Bev Harris, author of the upcoming “Black Box Voting: Ballot-Tampering” in the 21st Century, revealed that Republican Senator Chuck Hagel has ties to the largest voting machine company, Election Systems & Software (ES&S). She reported that he was an owner, Chairman and CEO of Election Systems & Software (called American Information Systems until name change filed in 1997). ES&S was the ONLY company whose machines counted Hagel’s votes when he ran for election in 1996 and 2002. The Hill, a Washington D.C. newspaper that covers the U.S. national political scene, confirmed her findings today and uncovered more details.

Hagel’s campaign finance director, Michael McCarthy, now admits that Senator Hagel still owns a beneficial interest in the ES&S parent company, the McCarthy Group. ES&S counts approximately 60 percent of all votes cast in the United States. According to the Omaha World-Herald which is also a beneficial owner of ES&S, Hagel was CEO of American Information Systems, now called ES&S, from November 1993 through June 2, 1994. He was Chairman from July 1992 until March 15 1995. He was required to disclose these positions on his FEC Personal Disclosure statements, but he did not.

Diebold demands that HBO cancel documentary on voting machines
Film saying they can be manipulated 'inaccurate'

By MICHAEL JANOFSKY
BLOOMBERG NEWS

Diebold Inc. insisted that cable network HBO cancel a documentary that questions the integrity of its voting machines, calling the program inaccurate and unfair.

The program, "Hacking Democracy," is scheduled to debut Thursday, , five days before the 2006 U.S. midterm elections. The film claims that Diebold voting machines aren't tamper-proof and can be manipulated to change voting results.

"Hacking Democracy" is "replete with material examples of inaccurate reporting," Diebold Election System President David Byrd said in a letter to HBO President and Chief Executive Chris Albrecht posted on Diebold's Web site. Short of pulling the film, Monday's letter asks for disclaimers to be aired and for HBO to post Diebold's response on its Web site.

According to Byrd's letter, inaccuracies in the film include the assertion that Diebold, whose election systems unit is based in Allen, Texas, tabulated more than 40 percent of the votes cast in the 2000 presidential election.

The letter says Diebold wasn't in the electronic voting business in 2000, when disputes over ballots in Florida delayed President Bush's victory for more than a month and raised questions about the reliability of electronic voting machines.

"We stand by the film," said Jeff Cusson, a spokesman for HBO, which is a unit of Time Warner Inc.

"We have no intention of withdrawing it from our schedule. It appears that the film Diebold is responding to is not the film HBO is airing."

David Bear, a spokesman for Diebold, said the company bought another firm, Global Elections, in 2002 that served about 8 percent of balloting in 2000, including voters in Florida. The company, which hasn't seen the film, based its complaints on material from the HBO Web site, Bear said.

This is Diebold's second recent defense of its system. On Sept. 26, Byrd wrote to Jann Wenner, editor and publisher of Rolling Stone, saying a story written by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., "Will the Next Election Be Hacked?" was "error-riddled" and that readers "deserve a better researched and reported article."

The HBO documentary is based on the work of Bev Harris, the Renton woman who founded BlackBoxVoting.org, which monitors election accuracy. In 2004 the attorney general of California took up a whistle-blower claim filed by Harris against Diebold and settled with the company for $2.6 million in December.

'Hacking' Doesn't Crack the Code

By Paul Farhi
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, November 2, 2006; Page C07

Something -- maybe a lot of things -- is wrong with how America conducts its elections. As you might have heard, there were a few problems down in Florida back in 2000, and more recently in the Maryland primary. No doubt, voting and vote-counting can be messy, complicated and subject to potentially outcome-shifting flaws.

With that as backdrop and five days before Election Day, HBO weighs in tonight with "Hacking Democracy," a somewhat torpid documentary that is itself complicated, flawed and messy.

The documentary's basic theme is that elections can be stolen by people able to manipulate the vote-recording software in electronic balloting machines. That should not shock anyone who has touched a computer. Given the increasing use of electronic voting machines -- they are counting about 80 percent of the votes cast today, according to the documentary -- it's no stretch to imagine that they could be worked to subvert democracy.

Could be. But "Hacking Democracy" doesn't actually show democracy's corruption. The documentary merely suggests the possibilities and tallies the suspicions, leaving viewers to come to the obvious conclusion.

To cast doubt on the results of Ohio's pivotal presidential vote in 2004, for example, the documentary dwells on a mandatory hand recount of the vote in Cuyahoga County (the documentary incorrectly identifies Cuyahoga as "a swing county"; Cuyahoga was a Democratic lock, going 2-to-1 for John Kerry). Indeed, "Hacking" finds a few things amiss, such as a random selection of ballots for the recount that might not have been so randomly selected. And?

Well, that's it. Content with introducing a vague mist of doubt, the documentary moves on.

But hold on. Surely, there was more going on in Ohio in 2004 worth raising questions about. Such as: the state's misallocation of voting machines, which led to long lines at the polls; restrictions on provisional ballots; the rejection of thousands of voter-registration forms by the Republican secretary of state (who happened to be chair of Bush's statewide campaign); Democrats alleging voter "intimidation" by Republicans; and the existence of tens of thousands of "spoiled" ballots.

Naw. At least not here.

The filmmakers also have chosen to make a TV documentary about one of the least telegenic subjects imaginable: software security flaws. To make their story more visual, and to humanize it, they've built their narrative around Bev Harris, a Seattle writer and gadfly who is convinced that electronic voting machines threaten the political process. Harris comes across as a zealot, imbued with the spirit of the righteous crusader, which is a nice way of saying she's a little hard to take

Kerry says he "botched joke" and lashes out at GOP
By Andrew Ryan, Globe Correspondent

An angry Senator John F. Kerry castigated Republicans at a nationally televised press conference this afternoon, accusing conservatives of twisting his words of a "botched joke" to suggest that students who do poorly in school will end up as soldiers serving in Iraq.

"My statement yesterday, and the White House knows this full well, was a botched joke about the President and the President's people not about the troops," Kerry said at a press conference in Seattle. "The White Houses attempt to distort my true statement is a remarkable testament to their abject failure making America safe.

Kerry: It Was a 'Botched Joke'
By Nathan Burchfiel
CNSNews.com Staff Writer
October 31, 2006

(CNSNews.com) - Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) says comments he made Monday that appeared to imply that American troops were uneducated were a "botched joke" intended to insult President Bush.

At a news conference in Seattle Tuesday, Kerry refused to apologize and accused Republicans of distorting his comment in a "classic GOP, textbook Republican campaign tactic."

His comment was "clearly a remark that was directed at this administration."

Kerry said Republicans "know precisely what I was saying, and they're trying to turn this because they have a bankrupt policy."

At a campaign stop in California for gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides, Kerry said Monday: "Education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, and you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."

Senator Kerry, Media Darling
National Review Online, by Thomas

Candidates are not the only major factors in this year’s elections. The media have taken a big role — and a biased role. The latest in a long list of examples is the way they have immediately circled the wagons around John Kerry to protect him and the Democrats from the reaction to an ill-advised remark that the senator made at a college in California.

What was the remark? “You know, education, if you make the most of it, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. And if you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq.”

That’s what the man said. It’s on tape so there is no basis for dispute about that. What there is a dispute about is what it meant.

One plain meaning is that, if you don’t get a good education, you could end up getting sent to Iraq. This would be consistent with a disdain for the military apparent not only in Senator Kerry’s voting record but also that of many other Democrats in Congress. So the Republicans grabbed that ball and ran with it.

Senator Kerry now claims that it was a “botched joke,” meaning that President Bush didn’t get a good education and that he has gotten the country stuck in Iraq. Even if we bend over backward to believe that Kerry didn’t really mean what he said, but had simply messed up the punch line, his follow-up statement later on only made matters worse.

He said he would “apologize to no one” that if anyone would believe that “a veteran, someone like me,” would “somehow criticize more than 140,000 troops serving in Iraq” then “they’re crazy.”

Maybe Senator Kerry has a bad memory — or maybe he is counting on the rest of us having a bad memory. He criticized more than 140,000 troops serving in Vietnam, making sweeping and unsubstantiated accusations against them of widespread atrocities back in the 1970s.

He criticized them at home and abroad, giving aid and comfort to our enemies in wartime. That is what first got the Swift Boat veterans after him, years before he ran for president in 2004.

Absolutely on the $! I again, just for fun, watched Chris Matthews last night. He has convinced himself that Kerry's gaffe was simply a joke gone wrong "and it is obvious if you read the transcript." Having read the transcript, and others having read the transcript, it is NOT obvious but a tortured conclusion.

Excerpt:

The McGill Daily reports that Hersh described video footage depicting alleged U.S. atrocities in Iraq, which he had viewed, but said he has not yet reported on. Hersh recalled one video in which he said American soldiers massacred a group of people playing soccer.

"Three U.S. armed vehicles, eight soldiers in each, are driving through a village, passing candy out to kids," he began. "Suddenly the first vehicle explodes, and there are soldiers screaming. Sixteen soldiers come out of the other vehicles, and they do what they’re told to do, which is look for running people.

"Never mind that the bomb was detonated by remote control,” Hersh continued. "[The soldiers] open up fire; [the] cameras show it was a soccer game.

"About 10 minutes later, [the soldiers] begin dragging bodies together, and they drop weapons there. It was reported as 20 or 30 insurgents killed that day,” Hersh said.

Hersh did not say where he got the videos, but it is well known that the terrorist insurgents in Iraq have been peddling carefully staged videos to gullible American journalists purporting to show atrocities by U.S. forces as part of al-Qaida's propaganda campaign.

Do the late-night comics make a difference?

And so far, Kerry's got it easy. His dominant caricatures? Botox, a giant head, and a rich wife. Not really the stuff of biting satire.

If there's one Kerry caricature with teeth, it's Kerry the "Waffler." This is especially problematic for Kerry since it is the core of Bush's message about him. This was how comedy worked to Bush's advantage in 2000: the Gore trait the comedians focused on was precisely the one the Bush camp wanted voters to focus on. In contrast, the Kerry campaign isn't arguing that Bush is dumb, because they know that won't win them any votes.

In what appeared to be an attempt to mock the Bush attack machine's ads against Kerry, The Daily Show aired a faux "Bush/Cheney attack ad" on March 22. The ad, featuring a snow-boarding John Kerry, was accompanied by a voice over "John Kerry: Sometimes he snowboards to the left. Other times, to the right. Don't we deserve a president who picks one side of the mountain and sticks to it?"

On March 31, Karen Hughes, who was appearing as Stewart's guest, complimented him on the Bush/Cheney attack ad. "I have to give you credit. I think you've had the best sound byte of the presidential campaign so far." Jon raised his eyebrows as she continued, "It was that picture of Senator Kerry on that snowboard going first one way, then the other way. For the war and against the war. He voted for the $87 billion before he voted against the $87 billion. You captured it! In comedy, you captured what our campaign has been trying to say."

"Karen? Karen?" Jon interrupted in a low voice, "I've got some bad news, though. We were being ironic."

That's the thing about jokes – their meaning is determined by the listener.

John Kerry's Statement on Iraq Before the War
TEXT FROM THE SPEECH JOHN KERRY MADE ON THE SENATE FLOOR
October 9, 2002

With respect to Saddam Hussein and the threat he presents, we must ask ourselves a simple question: Why? Why is Saddam Hussein pursuing weapons that most nations have agreed to limit or give up? Why is Saddam Hussein guilty of breaking his own cease-fire agreement with the international community? Why is Saddam Hussein attempting to develop nuclear weapons when most nations don't even try, and responsible nations that have them attempt to limit their potential for disaster? Why did Saddam Hussein threaten and provoke? Why does he develop missiles that exceed allowable limits? Why did Saddam Hussein lie and deceive the inspection teams previously? Why did Saddam Hussein not account for all of the weapons of mass destruction which UNSCOM identified? Why is he seeking to develop unmanned airborne vehicles for delivery of biological agents?

Does he do all of these things because he wants to live by international standards of behavior? Because he respects international law? Because he is a nice guy underneath it all and the world should trust him?

It would be naive to the point of grave danger not to believe that, left to his own devices, Saddam Hussein will provoke, misjudge, or stumble into a future, more dangerous confrontation with the civilized world. He has as much as promised it. He has already created a stunning track record of miscalculation. He miscalculated an 8-year war with Iran. He miscalculated the invasion of Kuwait. He miscalculated America's responses to it. He miscalculated the result of setting oil rigs on fire. He miscalculated the impact of sending Scuds into Israel. He miscalculated his own military might. He miscalculated the Arab world's response to his plight. He miscalculated in attempting an assassination of a former President of the United States. And he is miscalculating now America's judgments about his miscalculations.

All those miscalculations are compounded by the rest of history. A brutal, oppressive dictator, guilty of personally murdering and condoning murder and torture, grotesque violence against women, execution of political opponents, a war criminal who used chemical weapons against another nation and, of course, as we know, against his own people, the Kurds. He has diverted funds from the Oil-for-Food program, intended by the international community to go to his own people. He has supported and harbored terrorist groups, particularly radical Palestinian groups such as Abu Nidal, and he has given money to families of suicide murderers in Israel.

I mention these not because they are a cause to go to war in and of themselves, as the President previously suggested, but because they tell a lot about the threat of the weapons of mass destruction and the nature of this man. We should not go to war because these things are in his past, but we should be prepared to go to war because of what they tell us about the future. It is the total of all of these acts that provided the foundation for the world's determination in 1991 at the end of the gulf war that Saddam Hussein must: unconditionally accept the destruction, removal, or rendering harmless underinternational supervision of his chemical and biological weapons and ballistic missile delivery systems... [and] unconditionally agree not to acquire or develop nuclear weapons or nuclear weapon-usable material.

Saddam Hussein signed that agreement. Saddam Hussein is in office today because of that agreement. It is the only reason he survived in 1991. In 1991, the world collectively made a judgment that this man should not have weapons of mass destruction. And we are here today in the year 2002 with an uninspected 4-year interval during which time we know through intelligence he not only has kept them, but he continues to grow them.

I believe the record of Saddam Hussein's ruthless, reckless breach of international values and standards of behavior which is at the core of the cease-fire agreement, with no reach, no stretch, is cause enough for the world community to hold him accountable by use of force, if necessary. The threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real, but as I said, it is not new. It has been with us since the end of that war, and particularly in the last 4 years we know after Operation Desert Fox failed to force him to reaccept them, that he has continued to build those weapons.

He has had a free hand for 4 years to reconstitute these weapons, allowing the world, during the interval, to lose the focus we had on weapons of mass destruction and the issue of proliferation.

Did joke doom Kerry in 2008?
By Peter Wallsten

Los Angeles Times

WASHINGTON — Ever since he came within 118,000 Ohio votes of winning the presidency, Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts has refused to give up the idea that he could try again. He kept much of his 2004 finance team together and campaigned aggressively this year for dozens of fellow Democrats who could turn around and help Kerry make a comeback in 2008.

But with one botched joke, Kerry not only sapped some momentum from his party in the final week of a competitive election, he dealt a damaging blow to his White House aspirations.

The gaffe could not have come at a worse time for Kerry, who has been rebuilding his national campaign structure and hoping to capitalize on the political goodwill he amassed by raising more than $12 million for 2006 candidates and campaigning in 35 states. With the recent decision by former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner not to run for president, Kerry was hoping to position himself as the top challenger to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., for the party's nomination, although early surveys suggested he faced an uphill struggle.

Fellow Democrats now worry that Kerry's words made their party's candidates vulnerable to accusations of insensitivity toward the troops in the final week of an election in which Democrats seemed to be benefiting from voters' distaste for the Iraq war.

Moreover, the flap allowed the GOP to remind voters why they chose Bush in 2004 over a Democrat who was portrayed as a flip-flopper. It was enough to make some wish that Kerry would just go away for a while.

Carrying Kerry's Water

If you listen closely, you can hear a death rattle coming from Boston’s Morrissey Boulevard as the Boston Globe editorial board rushes in to save their homey’s bacon. While the Globe editors acknowledge the maladroit nature of the Kerry wit, they exonerate Kerry of the charge that he maligned the troops:...

GIS DROP SMART BOMB ON KERRY
HILARIOUS HEROES FIRE BACK OVER DEM AND DUMBER CRACK ABOUT IRAQ

November 2, 2006 -- WASHINGTON - A group of GIs showed they are smart enough to take on condescending Sen. John Kerry - by deploying a hilariously misspelled sign mocking the failed presidential candidate's comments about their education.

"Halp us Jon Carry - We R stuck hear n Irak," read the sign, which was apparently the brainchild of a group of service members from the Minnesota National Guard.

The picture was first revealed yesterday on the blog Web site of Milwaukee talk radio host Charlie Sykes, who said he got it from a listener who had a buddy in the unit.

The picture soon raced around the Internet, and it got much of the nation chuckling when it went up on Drudge Report later in the day.

Staff Sgt. Erik Holtan, a member of the Minnesota National Guard, says he saw the picture and recognized the insignia as that of his fellow Minnesota guardsmen - and he immediately put it up on his own blog site.

"It's awesome," he told The Post. "The troops over there have to be livid because of what [Kerry] said. I don't know why he would say that."

Holtan, who works at Guard headquarters, said he believes the troops behind the Kerry sign are in Iraq, since all the members of the unit in the shot - the 1/34 Brigade Troops Battalion - have been deployed.

Kerry's '72 Army Comments Mirror Latest
Nov 2, 3:12 AM (ET)

By JOHN SOLOMON
WASHINGTON (AP) - During a Vietnam-era run for Congress three decades ago, John Kerry said he opposed a volunteer Army because it would be dominated by the underprivileged, be less accountable and be more prone to "the perpetuation of war crimes."

Kerry, a decorated Vietnam veteran who turned against the war, made the observations in answers to a 1972 candidate questionnaire from a Massachusetts peace group.

After Kerry caused a firestorm this week with what he termed a botched campaign joke that Republicans said insulted current soldiers, The Associated Press was alerted to the historical comments by a former law enforcement official who monitored 1970s anti-war activities

Kerry apologized Wednesday for the 2006 campaign trail gaffe that some took as suggesting U.S. soldiers fighting in Iraq were undereducated. He contended the remark was aimed at Bush, not the soldiers.

In 1972, as he ran for the House, he was less apologetic in his comments about the merits of a volunteer army. He declared in the questionnaire that he opposed the draft but considered a volunteer army "a greater anathema."

"I am convinced a volunteer army would be an army of the poor and the black and the brown," Kerry wrote. "We must not repeat the travesty of the inequities present during Vietnam. I also fear having a professional army that views the perpetuation of war crimes as simply 'doing its job.'

"Equally as important, a volunteer army with our present constitutional crisis takes accountability away from the president and put the people further from control over military activities," he wrote.

Kerry's spokesman, David Wade, said Wednesday the historical document needed to be viewed in the era in which it was written but that it nonetheless raised a "bedrock question in a time of war when sacrifice should be shared by all Americans."

"These are the words 34 years ago of a 28-year-old veteran home from a war gone wrong, wondering who in America will bear the cost of battle and shoulder the responsibility of military service," Wade said.

Kerry filled out the candidate questionnaire at the request of Massachusetts Political Action for Peace, an anti-war group that decades later turned over its historical documents to university researchers.

AP obtained the document from someone who gathered it from archives during Kerry's unsuccessful 2004 presidential campaign against President Bush. Republicans in that election relentlessly assailed Kerry's role in the anti-war movement decades earlier.

Voter says she's too old to use new machines

Varied e-voting systems prepare for biggest test
...
By Rich Cholodofsky
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Wednesday, November 1, 2006

Last May's spring primary was like an opening night, a chance to work out the bugs for a long engagement.
Southwestern Pennsylvania elections officials insist they've done just that and are ready for the next show, when voters go to the polls Tuesday using new computerized voting systems in most Pennsylvania counties.

"We had a lot of people who were older and once we talked them through, they were fine," said Mildred Krinock, a poll worker in Derry Township. "I'm anxious to see what happens this time, if they come back and breeze through faster this time."

Officials say they anticipate a more streamlined system because voters will have an easier time using the machines and poll workers will have a better idea of how to set up the machines, operate them and then return them to election bureaus so the votes can be counted...

For those counties that purchased entirely new systems, the changes were due to a federal mandate that required counties to eliminate all old-style voting systems. The new, computerized voting machines had to be operational by last May's primary.

For about 50 years, Jean Semenko voted by pulling a lever.

Last May, she cast her ballot using a new touch-screen computer.

"I don't trust them. They can be too easily fixed," said Semenko, 73, of Greensburg. "I have a problem adjusting to anything computerized. I think I'm too old."

Vulnerability of electronic voting systems

Fox 'n Friends, asked to comment on Bev Harris' charges during a Fox interview on Monday, that election workers are having sleepovers with the machines, taking them home for as long as two-weeks prior to the election, making them subject to tampering and irregularities...

Terry Vaughan, Florida state elections official said ... the voting systems (in an election) have never been hacked externally, or internally, to his knowledge...

Kilmeade: are people bringing voting machines home

Not a policy in Bradford County or most other districts in Florida... there are tamper evidence seals... checks and balances

Steve: are you confident touchscreens gonna work in Florida

Vaughan: yes... confident security measures in place...

Should John Kerry Apologize? No. Keep denying the meaning of the word dumb.

C-Span is asking: Should John Kerry Apologize?

Clip Youtube entitled: Kerry Belittles U.S. Troops

Seriously, in the olden days without the Internet, we might not get the actual wording of what John Kerry said. We'd get the mainstream media paraphrasing and skewing what Kerry said.

With the Internet, we get the actual as said words. And a whole bunch of spin from all sides everywhere.

Even though the youtube video is slantedly entitled Kerry Belittles U.S. Troops, we can make up our own minds about what John Kerry said because we can hear and see what John Kerry said.

First, what did John Kerry say.

John Kerry
You know education, if you make the most of it, and you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't YOU GET STUCK IN IRAQ.

OK. So from that, is there only one interpretation? "you" means those serving in Iraq: so those troops in Iraq did not make the most of education, did not study hard, did not do their homework, did not make an effort to be smart, did not do well, and are stuck in Iraq.

"You" means George W. Bush: so George W. Bush did not make the most of education, did not study hard, did not do his homework, did not make an effort to be smart, did not do well, and George W. Bush is stuck in Iraq.

We'll accept Kerry's "you" meant George W. Bush. He shouldn't apologize. He should just keep on denying the meaning of the word you refers to students who are dumb.

Consider, Kerry was speaking to university "students." He wasn't speaking to a conference of living former Presidents and the current President. He used the word "you" meaning university students in that setting.

If Kerry meant Bush, he should have crafted his words much more carefully, and said Bush. That he didn't is his own fault for any misinterpretations. The burden for using the utmost care when speaking is as much on Kerry who wants` to be prez as it is on George W. Bush.

That's what Bush said to a Congress authorizing the resolution on war on Iraq. Which by the way, included a yea vote from Senator John F. Kerry/

C-Span interview with Tony Snow, White House Press Secretary.

Snow says apologize... the Democrats don't tell us what they would do about Iraq... all they do is talk against the President... Is it good enough, should you have faith in a party that doesn't show its cards, doesn't talk about what they would do in Iraq, just talks against the President.

Get the streaming video. The next caller is read a number of books about this President and the lies... do you realize you are part of this cabal that doesn't tell the truth... Republicans say they didn't read this or that book...

Snow: ...Kerry said something that a lot of people find offensive. The Americn Legion, finds it offensive, Senator John McCain, finds it offensive...

FOX 'n Friends: Gretchen is shocked at the absence from the New York Times of a headliner featuring what Kerry said.

Hey, Gretchen. For as little as John Kerry said, the New York Times could've put the entire "joke" on its front page without taking up any important space.

Hmmm. Now should we rephrase that? Was that a joke?

KERRY: I BOTCHED THE JOKE?

IMUS In the Morning

Senator Kerry calls in... everybody knows I botched the joke... not the first time I've done it... it's a disgraceful thing, somebody like me for 35 years fighting for veterans... fighting to honor them that the notion that this comment was directed at them is an insult... this is a great volunteer army... you're not capable of getting in if you're not smart...

I left out one word, says Kerry on Imus, us, they got us stuck.

Huh, Senator, they. does they includes you, who voted to authorize the use of force in Iraq by George W. Bush.

(Kerry Regrets: Mea Culpa: Kerry 'Regrets' Voting for Iraq Resolution By Susan Jones CNSNews.com Senior Editor October 12, 2006
(CNSNews.com) - Sen. John F. Kerry, who may be running for president again, says that voting to authorize the war in Iraq is one of his biggest political mistakes.

In a blog on his website, the Massachusetts Democrat noted on Wednesday, "Four years ago today, the United States Senate voted to give President Bush the authority to use force in Iraq. There's nothing -- nothing -- in my life in public service I regret more, nothing even close. We should all be willing to say: I was wrong, I should not have voted for the Iraq War Resolution.")

Kerry cancels campaign events after remarks
Senator won't make appearances with Dem candidates following uproar

‘I apologize to no one’
Kerry, who is considering another run for the White House in 2008, angrily fired back.

At a hastily arranged news conference in Seattle on Tuesday, Kerry said: “I apologize to no one for my criticism of the president and of his broken policy.”

Kerry said the comment in question was “a botched joke about the president and the president’s people, not about the troops ... and they know that’s what I was talking about.”

A Kerry spokeswoman, Amy Brundage, said Kerry’s prepared text had called for him to say: “Do you know where you end up if you don’t study, if you aren’t smart, if you’re intellectually lazy? You end up getting us stuck in a war in Iraq. Just ask President Bush.”

Kerry’s remarks came during a campaign rally for California Democratic gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides. Kerry opened his speech at Pasadena City College with several one-liners, saying at one point that Bush had lived in Texas but now “lives in a state of denial.”

He then said: “You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq.”

White House, Kerry Exchange Accusations
That, Kerry said, was meant as a reference to Bush, not troops. Kerry said it is the president who owes U.S. soldiers an apology - for "a Katrina foreign policy" that misled the country into war in Iraq, failed to adequately study and plan for the aftermath, has not properly equipped troops and has expanded the terrorist threat.

Which is it Senator Kerry. Were you referring to Bush, or "they." They is plural, so they can't be just George W. Bush.

American Legion to Sen. Kerry: Apologize Now Oct 31 8:49 AM US/Eastern

Steve on Fox n Friends: Could Kerry's statements be like the Dean scream?

Gretchen: thinks Kerry's comments are worse... this doesn't make Kerry look Presidential... he had an opportunity to apologize...

Steve: he can't run for President after that...

One of the trio - Steve Doocey - said John Kerry and George W. Bush attended the same school of learning, Harvard Business School.

Note: during the 2004 Presidential Election campaign, the fact that both John Kerry and George W. Bush were members of the secret society at Yale known as Skulls and Bones was rarely noted.

New York Post DEMS TROOP-BASHER

November 1, 2006 -- The Democratic Party's 2004 presidential nominee stepped on his tongue in California this week - and in so doing gave the American people yet another reason to distrust Democrats on defense and national security.

On Monday, speaking at a college campaign rally, Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.). told the student-heavy crowd: "If you make the most of [education], if you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well.

"If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."

It was, Kerry said yesterday, a joke misspoken.

Ha, ha.

But we're betting that the tens of thousands of young men and women now in Iraq, those about to deploy and those who already have served there - many more than once - aren't laughing.

Nor is President Bush.

"The men and women who serve in our all-volunteer Armed Forces are plenty smart and are serving because they are patriots - and Sen. Kerry owes them an apology," said the president.

As of last night, no apology was forthcoming.

Nor, interestingly, was there a word of disapprobation from Democratic Party leaders - many of whom have been working diligently to undercut Bush's War on Terror; doubtless many others would like to, but just don't dare.

Kerry himself has been trashing the military ever since returning from Vietnam in 1969 - which is why so many fellow vets hold him in deep disregard.

Not only is Kerry arrogant and insulting regarding America's contemporary military - he's also just plain wrong.

Military recruits today are actually more educated - not less - than their civilian counterparts of similar ages: More than 90 percent of recruits have a high school diploma vs. about 75 percent of the broader population.

As American Forces Press Service reported last year, "Military recruits actually have much higher average aptitudes than the general youth population . . . In fiscal 2005, 67 percent of recruits scored above the 60th percentile on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery. The test is designed so that the average young person will score 50 percent . . ."

Sen. John McCain, House Speaker Dennis Hastert and many others also said that Kerry owes servicemembers an apology.

IQ Question

October 21, 2004 This Just In—Kerry's IQ Likely Lower than Bush's!
By Steve Sailer

Bush's 1206 SAT score on the college entrance exam and his C average at Yale have been public knowledge since the last election. (Bush's Graduate Management Aptitude Test score and grades at Harvard Business School, however, are not known.)

Kerry's grades and academic test scores remain wholly unavailable. But we do know that he did not graduate from Yale with honors. His biography by three Boston Globe reporters recounts:

"During his senior year he 'majored in flying,' as Kerry put it, learning aerobatics and performing loop-de-loops instead of focusing on his studies."

Now that we've gotten started, we won't stop, and haven't. Since the morning of September 11, 2001 we've asked: Was George W. stem cell research takes new turn

Briefs: Pitt researcher gets cancer grantStaff and wire reports
Sunday, October 29, 2006

Dr. J. Peter Rubin of the University of Pittsburgh has received a three-year, $885,000 grant from the National Cancer Institute to demonstrate in an animal model that stem cells isolated from fat could be used to regenerate breast tissue in women who undergo mastectomy.
"The use of adipose or fat-derived stem cells may represent a better solution for soft tissue reconstruction in breast cancer patients," said Rubin, assistant professor of plastic and reconstructive surgery at Pitt.

Preliminary results showed that these cells formed a mound of tissue when they were seeded onto microscopic scaffolding injected under the skin of rats. If this approach is tried in breast reconstruction, Rubin said, surgeons could harvest the cells from a patients' abdominal fat. One pound of fat removed by a tummy tuck can yield as much as 200 million stem cells, which can be transformed into specialized cell types such as blood, muscle and cartilage, he said.
