The Bush Administration yesterday kicked off a process to determine whether polar bears should be added to the United States endangered species list because their habitat is melting.
The action is "a significant acknowledgement of what global warming is doing to the Arctic ice," said Kassie Siegel, an attorney with the Center for Biological Diversity in Joshua Tree, California.
In December the conservation group, along with Greenpeace and the Natural Resources Defense Council, sued the U.S. government to protect the world's polar bears from extinction.
According to the conservationists, Earth's steadily rising temperature is causing the polar bear's habitat to melt. Many scientists say the warming is due, in part, to human activities such as driving cars and burning coal, which release heat-trapping gases into the atmosphere,
If the bears are given federal protection, they would be the first U.S. mammals officially deemed to be in danger of extinction because of global warming, the conservation groups said.
Rosa Meehan, the chief of marine-mammal protection at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Anchorage, Alaska, said the conservation groups presented sufficient information to merit a close look at the status of polar bears...

Polar Bears on Thin Ice, Not Really! Though polar bears are uniquely adapted to the Arctic region, they are not wedded solely to its coldest parts nor are they restricted to a specific Arctic diet. Aside from a variety of seals, they eat fish, kelp, caribou, ducks, sea birds and scavenged whale and walrus carcasses. In addition, as discussed above, Arctic air temperatures were as high as present temperatures in the 1930s and polar bears survived.
The Bear Facts: The International Union for the Conservation of Nature has just put the polar bear on the endangered species list because it is supposedly "facing extinction" — mainly, it claims, as a result of global warming. But statistics show the polar bear is not facing extinction, not by a long shot.

Even if you missed the WSJ's take this week about the announcement that the big fuzzy white predators will be classified as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act, you can probably guess they weren't so enthusiastic. They borrowed the global warming camp's classic charge that politics wrongly trumps science in the American debate, citing a growing polar bear population over the last few decades as evidence that the threat to the "majestic" carnivore isn't real. It's all political manipulation, they cried, and it could lead us down the dangerous road to (gasp!) federally mandated reductions in greenhouse gases...

Normally, when parties settle a lawsuit, each side makes some concessions. Which is why it's puzzling, to say the least, that the Bush administration asked for so little when it abandoned a legal fight with environmental groups over the role of the Endangered Species Act in protecting polar bears.
The bears are already protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act. That law prevents anyone from attempting to "harass, hunt, capture or kill" polar bears and other animals covered by the act, such as porpoises and manatees. It also severely limits the importation and sale of trophies or other products from the covered species.
Nor is the bear population in alarming decline - if it is in decline at all. And developers obviously aren't building subdivisions across the tundra and threatening bear habitat.
So what's going on? Placing the bears under the jurisdiction of the species act would give environmentalists added legal leverage to target the construction of U.S. power plants anywhere in the country that use fossil fuels and emit greenhouse gases that arguably might contribute to the melting of the polar icecaps. The goal would be to get regulators and courts to impose an energy diet on the nation without the input of elected lawmakers and without any assurance that the economically crippling policy would boost polar bear populations.
In its settlement, the Interior Department agreed to "study" for at least another year whether polar bears should be listed. That study is considered a mere formality. Polar bears will almost certainly be covered by the species act, about the time President Bush leaves office...

An agreement the Bush administration reached with Mexico on Social Security benefits would allow illegal aliens granted amnesty in the future to claim credit for the time they worked illegally.
The deal was reached in 2004 but never released publicly because it hasn't been submitted to Congress. The TREA Senior Citizens League, a Social Security advocacy group, recently obtained the document through a Freedom of Information Act, and said it confirms the group's worst fears...
The deal has not taken effect because Mr. Bush has not signed it or submitted it to Congress. Once he does, Congress would have 60 days to vote against it or it automatically would become law.
Congress has never defeated any of the 21 other totalization agreements the United States has reached. Most of those have been with European nations, with the financial effects known to be smaller.
Some lawmakers say Mr. Bush has not submitted the agreement because it would get caught up in the debate over Social Security's poor fiscal health, which could doom the measure...

The programming the university is providing for help in teaching the new North American focus is just the latest evidence of the mounting campaign for a de facto North American Union. Although most in the establishment press are not covering the controversy, it has earned the opposition of a number of high-level voices including congressmen like Tom Tancredo, Virgil Goode and Ron Paul, and newsmen like CNN's Lou Dobbs who has described the U.S. government's actions in this effort as "Orwellian."

One of the most alarming findings of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) last year was the significant increase in the risk of invasive breast cancer among menopausal women who took combined conjugated equine estrogen and medroxyprogesterone acetate therapy (Prempro™). These data were at least reassuring (although confusing) in that there was no difference in mortality between the treatment group and the placebo group. The Million Woman Study recently published in the British medical journal the Lancet (8/03) compounds the WHI data. In this study, women receiving a combination of estrogen and progestin not only had an increased risk of breast cancer, but they had a 22% higher risk of death from breast cancer compared with women who weren't receiving hormonal therapy.
The Million Woman Study surveyed 1.1 million women in the United Kingdom aged 50 to 64. They were recruited between 1996 and 2001 and tracked for cancer incidence and death.
Based upon existing statistical data, we know that out of 1,000 postmenopausal women between the ages of 50 and 60 who don't use HRT, there will be approximately 20 breast cancer cases diagnosed. However, according to this study, in every 1,000 women who begin 10 years of HRT at the age of 50, there will be five extra cases among estrogen-only users, and 19 additional breast cancers among estrogen-progestin combination users...

Daniel Lowenstein teaches Election Law, Statutory Interpretation & Legislative Process, Political Theory, and Law & Literature. A leading expert on election law, he has represented members of the House of Representatives in litigation regarding reapportionment and the constitutionality of term limits. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the award-winning theatre troupe Interact and regularly brings the company to the School of Law to perform plays with legal themes, such as Sophocles' Antigone, Ibsen's Rosmerholm, and Wouk's The Caine Mutiny Court Martial.
Professor Lowenstein worked as a staff attorney at California Rural Legal Assistance for two and one-half years. While working for California's Secretary of State, Edmund G. Brown Jr. in 1971, he specialized in election law, and was the main drafter of the Political Reform Act, an initiative statute that California voters approved in 1974, thereby creating a new Fair Political Practices Commission. Governor Brown appointed Professor Lowenstein as first chairman of the Commission. He has served on the national governing board of Common Cause and has been a board member and a vice president of Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights.

Problems at the polls experienced in November by voters in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties were emblematic of nationwide failures of electronic voting systems, according to a report released Wednesday.
The report, compiled by a trio of national watchdog groups critical of electronic voting systems, found that touch-screen computerized voting resulted in long lines at the polls, people being turned away because of malfunctioning machines and even cases of flipped votes.
Nationally, the report said there were problems attributed to electronic voting in more than 300 counties in 36 states throughout the country.
"We were part of a trend. These machines, while touted by vendors as easy to use and secure, time and time again we've seen these kinds of problems," said Marybeth Kuznik, executive director of VotePa.

A report prepared by civic watchdog groups VoteTrustUSA, VotersUnite.org, and Voter Action found the 2006 mid-term elections were marred by persistent and widespread voting machine malfunctions. In preparing the report “E-Voting Failures in the 2006 Mid-Term Elections,” the groups examined data collected from the Election Protection Coalition hotline (1-866 OUR VOTE) and the Voter Action hotline, reports submitted from Election Day pollworkers through the Pollworkers for Democracy project and local and national news accounts collected by VotersUnite.Org.http://votetrustusa.org/index.php?
In all, 1022 accounts of machine related problems from more than 300 counties in 36 states were examined and categorized. The report summarizes and provides contextual and comparative analysis of the difficulties caused by each type of equipment problem, such as machine malfunctions that impeded polls from opening, machine failures at poll closing and vote tabulation, and votes lost or changed on the voting machine screen. It also includes first hand accounts from voters and pollworkers describing the machine difficulties they encountered on Election Day and how the machines hampered the voting process.
The report recounts incidents of voters leaving without casting a vote because the machines would not start or broke down during Election Day. Machines often failed to record the voter’s correct choice on the ballot or summary screen and caused voters to question if their vote was recorded. Several pollworker accounts described problems closing the machines, retrieving vote totals from the computerized systems, and aggregating the totals with software, sometimes counting votes multiple times or failing to count them at all. The report suggests that in some cases votes were lost...

Bill DeWeese for a leadership position, then after the election, when Dems captured the House, stated he would support DeWeese for Speaker of the House. In light of Majority Leader DeWeese's action today, it will be interesting to see what Mahoney thinks of the politics of DeWeese, who he would have voted for as Speaker of the House, but DeWeese didn't give him a chance!

Catch me if I'm wrong - all the Democrats except for 3 voted for O'Brien. (102-3 = 99) O'Brien got 105 votes. 6 Republicans voted for O'Brien. = 99 plus 6 = 105
All but 6 Republicans voted for John Perzel. (101 - 6 = 95. Perzel captured 3 Democrat votes. 98. But the tally says 97. 105 O'Brien and 97 Perzel.
That only adds up to 202. Somebody didn't vote as it was noted on PCN 102 Democrats and 101 Republicans. It must have been a Democrat who didn't vote. 101-3 = 98 OK it was O'Brien - he abstained!
Well, whatever - Democrats - all but 3 of them apparently fell behind H. William DeWeese's nomination of a Republican for Speaker of the House of PA. That is very revealing of DeWeese's gamesmanship, and the rank-and-file who well, were ranked and filed, or else, we guess.
A new slogan contest should ensue. I nominate Pennsylvania: State of Stultification!
This Democrat election of a Republican Speaker of the House should make for some fun interviews back home as well as town hall meetings!
At any rate, why'd DeWeese nominate a Republican, even over another Democrat?
All we can figure at this end of PA is DeWeese must have heard there are going to be two or even three Democrat defections to the Republican side of the aisle - not just those speakership votes - thus placing the Republicans in the majority and the Democrats in the minority of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
It's possible O'Brien could switch to Democrat, but why if two or three Democrats are going to switch to Republican. Then O'Brien has the status to hold to his Republican ideals intact, yet reach out to the now minority Democrats who put him in the speakership spot!

HARRISBURG -- Philadelphia Republican Dennis M. O'Brien has been elected speaker of the House.
Mr. O'Brien, who has served in the House for nearly 30 years and chaired the House Judiciary Committee in the last session, received 105 votes over Republican John Perzel's 97.
This sets up the unusual situation of having a Republican speaker in a Democratically controlled House.

HARRISBURG - In a stunning development, Philadelphia Republican Dennis O'Brien was elected the new speaker of the House, edging out Philadelphia Rep. John Perzel after weeks of political maneuvering by both Democrats and Republicans for control of the House.
The vote was 105 to 97.
In a bizarre twist, O'Brien's nomination actually came from the Democratic side, no less from Majority Leader Bill DeWeese (D., Greene), who had been considered the front-runner for the speaker post.
O'Brien has been recently targeted by Democrats, to get him to switch parties or to garner his support...

Update: What is sad, because of articles wherein reporters don't really ask any tough challenging questions, the people will actually start believing this move by the Democrats - nomination and support of a Republican other than Perzel for Speaker of the House - was about "reform" and "nonpartisanship," not about H. William DeWeese.

HARRISBURG - In a dramatic move that caught many by surprise, House Democrats orchestrated the appointment of a new Republican Speaker to lead the chamber for the next two years.
The presumed House Democratic Leader H. William DeWeese, who had set the stage to become speaker himself, made a stunning reversal by dropping his ambition under a new Democratic majority. Instead, he backed Philadelphia Republican Dennis O'Brien for the post.
Former GOP House Speaker John Perzel lost his bid when six GOP lawmakers crossed sides - including Bucks County Rep. Dave Steil - and voted with Democrats for O'Brien.
The move came shortly after swearing-in, when 50 new members, roughly one-quarter of the House, took office for the first time, many touting the need for government reform.
It was the largest turnover in recent history, sparked by a record number of retirements and two dozen upsets at the polls.
But the flowers and well-wishes of family quickly turned into a political brawl lasting more than an hour on the House floor. It all started on Saturday with the news that House Democratic Rep. Tom Caltagirone, of Berks County, would vote for Perzel. Doing so would have upset the fragile 102 to 101 majority that DeWeese, of Greene County, needed to become Speaker.
When DeWeese realized he didn't have the votes, he turned to making sure Perzel didn't get the post.
This may be the first time in Pennsylvania history that the House has a Speaker from a different political party than the chamber's majority. O'Brien, a 30-year lawmaker from a heavily Democratic district in northeastern Philadelphia, would only answer questions about a possible switch to the Democratic Party with the words: "I am a Republican."

Following the lead in a historic strategy devised by state Rep. H. William DeWeese, D-Waynesburg, local Democratic legislators supported Republican Dennis O'Brien of Philadelphia for Speaker of the House, saying they believe a reform agenda will still be top priority this year.
Locally, longtime state Rep. Peter J. Daley, D-California, and freshmen legislators Deberah Kula, D-North Union, and Timothy S. Mahoney, D-South Union, supported O'Brien's election as speaker on Tuesday when it became apparent that a Democrat could not win.
Democrats hold a 102-101 majority over Republicans in the House, but Democratic Rep. Tom Caltagirone, of Berks County announced over the weekend he would vote for John Perzel, a Philadelphia Republican who had held the speaker's chair since 2003, and not DeWeese. Daley said he knew something was in the air New Year's Day, but did not know exactly what it was until DeWeese nominated O'Brien on the floor of the House.
Daley said the Democrats were going to go into caucus at 11 a.m. but decided not to do that because they "didn't want to show their hand." He said after the deal was made, the members finally went to the floor and revealed their plan.
Mahoney said Wednesday that he voted for O'Brien because it was the "only way to get true reform." He said he looks for O'Brien to work with the Democratic Party closer than any other Republican would. He said rumblings were heard among the members that "something extraordinary" was about to happen, and it did when nearly every Democrat and several Republicans supported O'Brien to wield the gavel for the next two years.
Mahoney said for Perzel, who started taking about reform in the last few days, it was too little, too late. "He wanted to start talking about reform but it took too long. The Republicans were in charge for 12 years and they did midnight pay raises and everything else. There was no reform," Mahoney said...

Now we're tracking how our local district representatives voted, particularly Timothy Mahoney, who pre-election win offered that he would not vote for Rep. Bill DeWeese for a leadership position, then after the election, when Dems captured the House, stated he would support DeWeese for Speaker of the House. In light of Majority Leader DeWeese's action today, it will be interesting to see what Mahoney thinks of the politics of DeWeese, who he would have voted for as Speaker of the House, but DeWeese didn't give him a chance!
Mahoney will have to explain to constituents why if he did he voted for a Republican for Speaker of the House - per the leadership maneuverings of Majority Leader Bill DeWeese!

Rep. Dwight Evans (D., Phila.) said O’Brien’s ascent to speaker only came together in the last three days.
He said Rep. Josh Shapiro (D., Montgomery) first approached O’Brien about the job on New Year’s Eve, and that initially, O’Brien was hesitant about being nominated by Democrats.
So on New Year’s Day, Evans said he and other top Democratic leaders met with O’Brien at the Marriott in West Conshohocken for three hours. Gov. Rendell later got on the phone. The meeting resumed today at the governor’s mansion in Harrisburg, and later at Evans’ office...

DeWeese is acting odd, odd, odd... he shouts out Democrat Rep. Thomas R. Caltagirone's name several times now. Whew, just think, had Tim Mahoney held his ground, DeWeese could've been shouting out two names (even though Mahoney could have also held his ground and said he'd vote for a Democrat for speaker, anybody but DeWeese)
Governor Rendell makes a statement regarding Caltagirone setting this process this mechanism in motion! What power. We are tickled that one individual can truly make a difference there in that power-infested place.

Catch me if I'm wrong - all the Democrats except for 3 voted for O'Brien. (102-3 = 99) O'Brien got 105 votes. 6 Republicans voted for O'Brien. = 99 plus 6 = 105
All but 6 Republicans voted for John Perzel. (101 - 6 = 95. Perzel captured 3 Democrat votes. 98. But the tally says 97. 105 O'Brien and 97 Perzel.
That only adds up to 202. Somebody didn't vote as it was noted on PCN 102 Democrats and 101 Republicans. It must have been a Democrat who didn't vote. 101-3 = 98 OK it was O'Brien - he abstained!
Well, whatever - Democrats - all but 3 of them apparently fell behind H. William DeWeese's nomination of a Republican for Speaker of the House of PA. That is very revealing of DeWeese's gamesmanship, and the rank-and-file who well, were ranked and filed, or else, we guess.
A new slogan contest should ensue. I nominate Pennsylvania: State of Stultification!
This Democrat election of a Republican Speaker of the House should make for some fun interviews back home as well as town hall meetings!
At any rate, why'd DeWeese nominate a Republican, even over another Democrat?
All we can figure at this end of PA is DeWeese must have heard there are going to be two or even three Democrat defections to the Republican side of the aisle - not just those speakership votes - thus placing the Republicans in the majority and the Democrats in the minority of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
It's possible O'Brien could switch to Democrat, but why if two or three Democrats are going to switch to Republican. Then O'Brien has the status to hold to his Republican ideals intact, yet reach out to the now minority Democrats who put him in the speakership spot!

O’Brien was nominated by Rep. Bill DeWeese, a Greene County Democrat who put forth O’Brien’s name after acknowledging he did not have enough votes to win the top leadership position himself.
Former House Speaker John Perzel, also a Philadelphia Republican, congratulated O’Brien after his election by a 105 to 97 vote. Perzel held the position for almost four years.
O’Brien chaired the House Judiciary Committee last session. A moderate Republican, he is considered by many to be on good terms with Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell and largely supportive of the governor’s programs...
Since the November election, there has been speculation that O’Brien might switch his registration to the Democratic Party, but he gave no immediate indication today that he might do so...

Saliva Test, Digital Mammography, Computerized Thermal Imaging...
Exciting advances in breast-cancer diagnostics and treatment may one day make standard mammograms, surgery and radiation obsolete.
Saliva Test
In a preliminary study, researchers measured saliva levels of HER2, a protein that is elevated in some breast-cancer cases. They were able to identify 87 percent of those with the disease.
Status: Not yet available. The company that developed the saliva test hopes to apply for FDA approval by the end of 2003.
Digital Mammography
Recent reports show that a mammogram is only as good as the quality of the scan and the skill of the person reading it. Digital mammograms, unlike X-ray film, can be manipulated to improve brightness and contrast. They can also be combined with computer-aided detection systems as a way to help flag suspicious areas in the breast.
Status: The FDA approved digital mammography in 2000, and availability is growing as clinics invest in the equipment. A large trial is under way to compare digital and conventional mammography.
Computerized Thermal Imaging
A heat-sensitive camera captures thermal images of the breast, which can be analyzed to help doctors decide if a suspect area should be biopsied. The technique is based on slight temperature variations between benign and malignant lesions.
Status: It's currently under FDA review and available only to patients in clinical studies

Researchers are working on a new saliva test to help detect breast cancer, according to data presented at the annual meeting of the International Association for Dental Research. The test measures the amount of HER2 found in a sample of a patient’s saliva. HER2 is a genetic material that, when present in large amounts, has been associated with breast cancer. While the new test is still under development, researchers believe that it may eventually help to detect breast cancer in its early stages and also help physicians monitor treatment in women already diagnosed with the disease....

Bureau (TTB), which regulates the alcohol industry. Regular beers contain
about 10 grams of carbohydrates per 12-ounce serving.
"Independent testing confirms there is no maltose -- or any other sugar --
in our beers, or most other popular beers," said Douglas J. Muhleman, group
vice president and chief brewmaster at Anheuser-Busch, Inc. "This is a basic
fact of brewing science, and a call to any brewer would have cleared this up
for Dr. Agatston."
In his book, Agatston advises dieters to "avoid white wine, spirits, or,
worst of all, beer"; calls maltose in beer "even worse than table sugar";
calls maltose "the king of all sugars" that leads to a "beer belly"; and says
"guzzling this beverage" encourages "storage of fat around the midsection."
"We have notified Dr. Agatston about his inaccuracies," said Francine
Katz, Anheuser-Busch vice president and spokesperson. "Unfortunately, he has
so far refused to remove these false statements from his books and Web site.
He has taken no substantive action to make it known to the millions of people
who followed his advice that the information he provided on beer is terribly
flawed and misleading. They have a right to know the truth, so we are doing
our best to provide it."

lose weight," said Dr. Klein. "Light beers have about 100 calories, and
regular beers about 160 calories in a 12-ounce bottle."

limited audience in the diet's chat room and have not changed the information
on beer in the "South Beach" books or Web site.
An online expert for "The South Beach Diet" recently wrote in the chat
room: "This diet is constantly changing based on new research so some of the
info in the book is out of date. One of those items, you will be happy to
know, is the ban on beer ... One or two drinks [of beer] is unlikely to cause
weight gain since it takes an extra 3500 calories over what the body needs to
gain a pound of fat."
When questioned about low-carb beers by one chat room dieter, Agatston
replied: "All of the alcoholic beverages, when consumed in moderation, appear
to have favorable effects on heart disease and diabetes prevention. We feel
that, as a rule, consuming alcohol with a meal is much more preferable than is
consuming alcohol on an empty stomach. We also prefer the low-carb beers,

And the name of climate researcher Kevin Trenberth elicits a sputtered "opportunist."

You heard it here first: Global warming will be over in 10 years.
So says William Gray, the Colorado State University hurricane prognosticator who has become an outspoken critic of the notion that human-induced global warming is making the storms worse.
Not only is that untrue, Gray said today at the National Hurricane Conference in Orlando, but he thinks the warming that the world has seen for the past 30 years is about to reverse itself, just as a previous warming spurt in the early 20th century turned to a brief cooling period until around 1970.
"I don't know exactly when, but I would expect the next five or 10 years or so," he said. Gray said his youthful assistant, Phil Klotzbach, "says he'll put some dandelions on my grave if 20 years from now the Earth is a little cooler."

DENVER (AP) -- The words "global warming" provoke a sharp retort from Colorado State University meteorology professor emeritus William Gray: "It's a big scam."
And the name of climate researcher Kevin Trenberth elicits a sputtered "opportunist."
At the National Center for Atmospheric Research, where Trenberth works, Gray's name prompts dismay. "Bill Gray is completely unreasonable," Trenberth says. "He has a mind block on this."
Only 55 miles separate NCAR's headquarters, nestled in the Front Range foothills, from CSU in Fort Collins. But when it comes to climate change, the gap is as big as any in the scientific community.

...The media have almost universally ignored an accurate description of the spectrum of human forcings on climate as presented in the National Research Council 2005 report.
Thus the advocates of blaming global warming erroneously assume that carbon dioxide emissions are the main cause of this disaster, but miss the other human caused global warming forcings that we summarized in our August 29th blog. They miss that other climate change effects, both due to natural and human- caused influences, such as atmospheric and ocean circulation changes due to spatially heterogeneous climate forcings such as landscape changes and aerosol emissions, have a greater effect than the relatively small magnitude of global warming that has actually been documented (see Pielke and Christy 2005).The media fail to recognize that climate is complex and involves numerous natural and human climate forcings and feedbacks. Open Comment to Andy Revkin with Respect to your 23 August 2005 Article in the New York Times Regarding my Resignation from the CCSP Committee

The reference to my perspective and to the reasons I resigned from the Committee are mischaracterized and erroneous in the New York Times article (subscription required). One major reason that the Climate Science weblog was launched was to correct such mistaken communications. Anyone who has read my blogs will recognize that your article is inaccurate as to how it characterizes my perspective on human-caused climate change and on the reasons for my resignation from the CCSP Committee.
My comments on your article appear below
NY Times Article: “A scientist who has long disagreed with the dominant view that global warming stems mainly from human activity has resigned from a panel that is completing a report for the Bush administration on temperature trends in the atmosphere.”
Pielke Sr. Response: The well documented increases of atmospheric concentration of CO2 are due to anthopogenic emissions of this gas. This comes from vehicles, industry, biomass burning and other sources of combustion. CO2 warms the Earth’s climate system radiatively (i.e. it is a global warming effect). As I wrote in the article “Heat storage within the Earth system” and as summarized in the 2005 National Research Council report “Radiative forcing of climate change: Expanding the concept and addressing uncertainties” of which I was a co-author, the Earth’s climate system has warmed, and human activities certainly have contributed. To state that I have “long disagreed..that global warming stems from human activity” is a completely erroneous characterization of my perspective...
NY Times Article: “Pielke contends that changes in landscapes like the spread of agriculture and cities could explain many of the surface climate trends, while most climate experts now see a clear link to accumulating emissions of heat-trapping gases like carbon dioxide.”
Pielke Sr. Response: This is a completely bogus statement of my conclusions on climate. My perspective on climate forcings is described by the NRC Report that I co-authored in which a diversity of climate forcings including the radiative effect of added CO2 is involved. I have repeatedly written in the peer-reviewed literature (e.g. see Nonlinearities, feedbacks and critical thresholds within the Earth’s climate system) that climate prediction (and therefore attribution to specific climate forcings) is a daunting challenge since the climate system is nonlinear and chaotic. Landscape change is only one of a number of climate forcings. I can only assume that this statement is written out of an intentional attempt to mischaracterize my work or simply a failure to comprehend my various peer-reviewed papers on this subject.
NY Times Article: “Pielke said he decided to resign after three papers on the troposphere trends were published online on Aug. 11 by the journal Science. The papers said errors in satellite and balloon studies in the tropics explained why earlier analyses failed to find warming in the troposphere. Several authors of those papers, who are also authors of the coming government report, said at the time that the new findings would be discussed in the report. Pielke said those statements were an effort to influence the shape of the final report.”
Pielke Sr response: This is also erroneous. You made no mention of the inappropriate shadow version of the Chapter that I was Convening Lead Author on that you were aware of, nor that it was not the publication of the papers, but the repeated cherry-picking of information from the draft Report that were prematurely presented to the media and to the Senate Committee that were the issue. What can explain this fictional reporting?
While readers of our Climate Science blog will be provided a correction, the more general readers of the NY Times will be presented with an extremely biased and error-laden view of this issue. I am simply aghast at the major errors and mischaracterizations in this article. I’d welcome your response...

I presented this view as President of the American Association of State Climatologists, and was representing this professional organization.
Our research has clearly demonstrated that human activities have very significant effects on local, regional and global climate. What we have shown, however, is that the important climate forcings include the radiative effect of CO2, but also include other first-order climate forcings such as the biogeochemical effect of additional CO2, land use/land cover change and the diverse effects of aerosol emissions. To define me as a “climate skeptic” is completely wrong. Indeed, by including the diversity of climate forcings, those who focus primarily on CO2 as the anthropogenic climate forcing are the true climate skeptics.

Efforts to calculate what is going on in the oceans, the land and the atmosphere are an unparalleled exercise....
The task falls to mathematical models run by supercomputers like the one in NCAR's basement. These "general circulation models" attempt to keep track of a multitude of variables around the globe - such as ocean currents, air and sea temperatures, rainfall and the composition of the atmosphere.
"This is a unique exercise in science and a very difficult one," said Christopher Essex, a mathematician at the University of Western Ontario in Canada.
The models are trying to project a future world, Essex said, without a complete theoretical base on how climate works and the risk of small errors being amplified.
Another problem, Essex said, is in the inability to do controlled experiments - one of science's key tools.
"There's only one atmosphere, so you can't hold everything steady and change just one variable to see what happens," he said.
Essex offered his critique of the models at a Los Alamos National Laboratory climate conference in Santa Fe in July.
At the end of the presentation, CSU's Gray jumped up and demanded: "Should we base national policy on these models?"
"I'm not touching that," Essex replied.
And then Essex added: "At every stage of the history of science, there has been some element that was impossible, and we've found a way around it. I am sure we will here."
This did not assuage Bill Gray.
Gray is among the most strident critics, quick to use words like "fraud" or "gang" to describe the modelers.
Instead of model projections, Gray looks at the history and patterns of weather to find trends.
And befitting his 76 years, Gray has a long view. His first report on climate - on the return of the dust bowl - was in the early 1940s when he was in junior high school.
"We'd gone through a warming trend in the '40s, and everybody was saying we were going to win World War II but face terrible droughts," Gray said.
Soon after, temperatures went into a cooling trend and by 1975, Gray points out, there was talk of a coming ice age.
The Earth does have natural cycles of cooling and warming - during the past 740,000 years there have been eight cycles with four ice ages.
The cycles appear to be tied to slight variations in the tilt of the Earth toward the sun.
During the last ice age - which ended about 10,000 years ago - Earth was on average about 4 degrees Fahrenheit cooler, and what is now Manhattan was buried under ice.
At some point the Earth will wobble on its axis again, setting the stage for an ice age.
There are other phenomena affecting global temperatures over time, such as El Niño, a Pacific Ocean warm-water mass that appears in roughly five-year cycles and changes world weather patterns.
And there is the Atlantic thermohaline current, a conveyor belt moving heat north on the surface and then dropping it to the ocean floor and heading back to the equator - a 1,200-year trip.
Changes in the current lead to changes in temperature. Somehow the models have to account for these natural variations too.
Gray believes that the warmer temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere are linked to a natural slowing in the thermohaline current, not the carbon dioxide.
Some of the models also show the current is slowing and that, along with warming oceans, adds to hurricane risks.
This has sparked one of the biggest scientific disputes of the moment.
It is a debate in which NCAR's Trenberth and CSU's Gray are, of course, on opposite sides

Global-warming skeptics continue to punch away

WASHINGTON — It should be glorious to be Bill Gray, professor emeritus. He's the guy who predicts the number of hurricanes that will form during the coming tropical-storm season. He works in the atmospheric-science department of Colorado State University. He's mentored dozens of scientists.
But he's also outraged.
Much of his government funding has dried up. He has had to put his own money, more than $100,000, into keeping his research going. If none of his colleagues comes to his funeral, he says, that'll be evidence that he had the courage to say what they were afraid to admit.
Which is this: Global warming is a hoax.
He has testified about this to the U.S. Senate. He has written magazine articles, given speeches, done everything he could to get the message out.
"I've been in meteorology over 50 years. I've worked damn hard, and I've been around. My feeling is some of us older guys who've been around have not been asked about this. It's sort of a baby-boomer, yuppie thing."
Gray believes in observations. Direct measurements. Numerical models can't be trusted. Equation pushers with fancy computers aren't the equals of scientists who fly into hurricanes.
"Few people know what I know. I've been in the tropics, I've flown in airplanes into storms. I've done studies of convection, cloud clusters and how the moist process works. I don't think anybody in the world understands how the atmosphere functions better than me."
In just three, five, maybe eight years, he says, the world will begin to cool again.

Read the following analysis carefully. Actually, a reporter shouldn't be lampooning anybody, or skewing a report with his/her own opinion. A reporter should neutrally report the facts, and accurately present any quotes from experts, no matter what side of the question or issue the individual reporter personally takes...

Global warming, bye-bye?
You heard it here first: Global warming will be over in 10 years.
So says William Gray, the Colorado State University hurricane prognosticator who has become an outspoken critic of the notion that human-induced global warming is making the storms worse.
Not only is that untrue, Gray said today at the National Hurricane Conference in Orlando, but he thinks the warming that the world has seen for the past 30 years is about to reverse itself, just as a previous warming spurt in the early 20th century turned to a brief cooling period until around 1970.
"I don't know exactly when, but I would expect the next five or 10 years or so," he said. Gray said his youthful assistant, Phil Klotzbach, "says he'll put some dandelions on my grave if 20 years from now the Earth is a little cooler."

Why is Canada spending almost as much on new icebreaking ships for it’s "melting" arctic as it is spending on Kyoto?

Science Digest (February 1973) reported that "the world's climatologists are agreed" that we must "prepare for the next ice age." The Christian Science Monitor ("Warning: Earth's Climate is Changing Faster Than Even Experts Expect," Aug. 27, 1974) reported that glaciers "have begun to advance," "growing seasons in England and Scandinavia are getting shorter" and "the North Atlantic is cooling down about as fast as an ocean can cool." Newsweek agreed ("The Cooling World," April 28, 1975) that meteorologists "are almost unanimous" that catastrophic famines might result from the global cooling that the New York Times (Sept. 14, 1975) said "may mark the return to another ice age." The Times (May 21, 1975) also said "a major cooling of the climate is widely considered inevitable" now that it is "well established" that the Northern Hemisphere's climate "has been getting cooler since about 1976.
